My First Week: Deborah Gilpin

17 October 2023 (by admin)

My first week started with trepidation and excitement....

My main reason for becoming a teacher is to make a difference, especially with those who experience various barriers to their learning. I am lucky to have been working in my school for many years, which has helped as I start this new journey into teaching. I am in a high school, predominantly with students in year 7 and it was hard to say who was more nervous in that first lesson, me or them! It has been really good getting to know the students and watching them become more relaxed as the week progressed. I am beginning to make some positive relationships with the pupils and establishing their trust. I have a great working relationship with the class teacher and have been assisting her for most of the first week, learning about schemes of work, how she plans each lesson, where to find the resources etc. I have taught a few times, and my first lesson went surprisingly well. My biggest challenge coming into the week was overcoming my own nerves from having all eyes focused on me. I had a little post-it note on the desk where only I could see it with a little message to keep calm and not worry. This helped me to remember that I could do it and I felt a massive sense of achievement as the bell went, with positive feedback from the TA who was in the class. The support I have received from my class teacher, mentor and other colleagues has been amazing. The SCITT route is definitely a great way to learn as you are fully immersed in the teaching environment from the first day. I am looking forward to continuing on this journey and seeing what next week brings.
