My First Week - Chloe Ashley

4 October 2022 (by admin)

I was nervous to actually start my teacher training journey on the first academic day in September.....

I had already been into the school a few times prior to summer to meet my mentor, look around the school and for transition days for the new classes. But this journey I was starting, I was extremely nervous (but this is normal and passed quickly). I think my nerves were relating to not knowing what to expect at an inset day.

Right from the beginning of my teacher training journey, I was treated as one of the staff. On my first day, at the inset day, the morning was filled with information on the new objectives and targets for the upcoming academic year, meeting all the staff and hearing from all the subject leads within my school.

After this, we then went back to our classes and spent the afternoon preparing for children to start the following day.

The rest of the week consisted of the children coming in for half days to familiarise themselves with reception and being in school. I helped welcome the children at the doors and dismiss them at home time as well as engaging in continuous provision with all children and getting to know them as much as they were getting to know us as staff.

On the Friday I attended Kingsbridge training centre and had an introduction to behaviour and safeguarding session in the morning over zoom.

Following this, I then had an in-person session in the afternoon that was an introduction to the course and explaining key documentation such as your CPO and how to fill in your weekly reflection ahead of your mentor meetings the following week. From these sessions we were given tasks to complete the following week in school relating to behaviour management and safeguarding.

Overall I really enjoyed my first week in my placement school and found the sessions with Kingsbridge engaging, important and this paired with a successful week in school fuelled my excitement to get back into the classroom on Monday.
